Circular economy and new business models for emerging companies in the early 2020s economy

Background The manufacturing industry has a need to enhance resource efficiency, the use of side streams and the circulation of substances throughout the use chain. Life extension, reuse, use of side streams, remanufacturing and eco-design offer opportunities for new business openings. Innovation and deployment of new business models are key challenges for Finnish industry. At the national level, a strong debate has emerged between traditional manufacturing industry and service business, which slows down structural change and the emergence of new innovations. Developing service chains and exploiting digital transformation can create new business and improve the international competitiveness of high-growth companies. The need for a change in business models is also very clear from South Savo companies in future messages and wishes; companies reflect on the development of the service business and question current business models. Objectives The aim of the project is to renew or update the business model of 100 companies in South Savo by 2021 to meet the requirements of the 2020s to take into account the development of the platform economy, changes in value chains and resource efficiency potential. In this context, the aim is also to accelerate and improve the deployment and usability of Manufacturing Synergies or mansyns.fi circular economy platform/marketplace. The goal is that by the end of the project, the South Savo circular economy marketplace (mansyns.fi) will have more than 100 offerings and at least 50 active users, and several dozen industrial companies in South Savo will have taken the requirements of circular economy and sustainable development into account in their business operations. One of the objectives of the project is to carry out 10-20 agile experiments focusing on new technologies in cooperation with manufacturing companies, start-ups, regional training organisations and/or other technology partners. In addition, the project aims to activate three companies to apply for initial direct funding from the EU (SME instrument) during the project. Measures Measures (the project will implement four work packages) 1- Developing business models and income accounting for young developing enterprises (NKY) and productive enterprises. 2. Promoting fast and agile experiments and pilots that enhance competitiveness and support low-carbon, and showcase them to a larger number of companies in the region during technology-baseling workshops. The work package will provide companies with modern digital tools to improve their competitiveness by enhancing their operational activities (in cooperation with Mikseimikkeli and the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences) 3. Accelerating internationalisation 4. Development of trans-regional connections in accordance with the themes of the project Results The project will allow the creation of 35 new companies that want to grow and grow in Etelä-Savo, using new business models and opportunities, even globally. It is estimated that 100 new jobs will be created in these as well as in existing SMEs.
