The existing Karavanke railway tunnel, in which an electrified two-track railway line runs, is in very poor condition. The Karavanke Tunnel does not provide sufficient structure gauge (existing minimum brightness gauge) in line with modern standards of the European rail network. The basic objectives to be achieved by the realisation of the project are to improve rail traffic and passenger safety and safe and efficient disaster management, while at the same time ensuring speed parameters for the efficient operation of rail transport and ensuring that the category of line is raised to D4.
