The aim of the project is to improve the quality of nursing and obstetrics education, including in the field of prevention and promotion of health (health education) and to develop mechanisms to increase the number of nurses and midwives employed in the Polish health care system. Current data indicate that approximately 48 % (source: personal data of DPIP and NRPiP) nurses and midwives who completed their studies in the years 2011-2014 leaving education institutions apply to the district chambers of nurses and midwives for the right to practise, and from the group which receives this right not all take up work in the profession. The reasons for this phenomenon are mainly the low financial attractiveness of the profession and the employment policy applied by employers (source: Document drawn up in the framework of the work of the Panel on the Analysis and Evaluation of Civil Protection in Nursing and Obstetric Services and the definition of the criteria underlying the prioritisation of post-graduate education, December, 2013, the RN4CAST project. One of the key actions of the project will be the development and implementation of legal solutions (e.g. in terms of employment standards for nurses and midwives, valuation of guaranteed benefits, etc.), which will contribute to a real increase in the number of jobs for nurses and midwives in Poland, as well as improving the conditions of their work. This project is complementary to the competition for nursing and obstetrics education institutions, since it creates formal and legal conditions for the creation and development of ‘white jobs’ and thus affects the demand for nursing/maternity services. On the other hand, the competition for nursing and midwifery schools will contribute to an increase in the number of graduates, and thus will affect supply issues on nursing and maternity services.
