Świnoujście, a city uniquely situated on islands, has long struggled with transportation challenges. Ferry crossings, dependent on weather conditions, connected it to the rest of Poland, causing difficulties for residents and tourists alike. A modern, 1780-meter undersea tunnel with access roads now provides a permanent, fast, safe, and year-round connection. This groundbreaking project marks a turning point in the city's and region's history, long awaited by generations.
Świnoujście is Poland's only city located entirely on islands. Daily ferry crossings between the islands of Uznam and Wolin were a distinctive feature, a tourist attraction, but also a source of frustration – long queues, delays, and dependence on weather and ship traffic.
The Świnoujście Tunnel project is one of the most strategic and transformative infrastructure projects in Western Pomerania. The 1.78 km undersea tunnel enables permanent, year-round connectivity between the islands, eliminating reliance on outdated, overburdened, and weather-sensitive ferry crossings.
This investment has improved territorial accessibility, safety, and quality of life. Travel times between the islands have been reduced from tens of minutes to just a few minutes, benefiting generations of residents. Access to work, education, healthcare, and housing is no longer a challenge.
The tunnel has removed transport barriers, reduced travel times, increased safety and comfort, and streamlined logistics to the ports and the German border. The project aligns with EU cohesion goals, supporting cross-border integration and a competitive, resilient, and accessible Europe.
The innovative Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) technology used in the project makes it one of Poland's most technologically advanced road investments. Comprehensive safety and traffic management infrastructure has been implemented, supporting sustainable urban mobility goals. The project combines technical excellence with economic efficiency, environmental care, and resident well-being, setting a benchmark for sustainable development.
