Development and verification under real conditions of new technology for manufacturing large-diameter multi-denty drills and PDC types using incremental manufacturing methods (3D printing) implemented in Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) technology

The main aim of the project is to develop and test new technologies in NiUW for the production of multi-grey drills and PDC drills, which will shorten the production process, improve the durability of the drills produced, reduce production costs and be susceptible to the automation required by industry 4.0 applications. The project will produce prototypes of large-diameter multi-dentnel drills and PDC (polycrystalline diamond compact) drills, which will be tested in close to real conditions and under real conditions. The aim is to increase the competitiveness of NiUW on the world markets in the supply of multi-bit drills and PDCs. If the proposed laser welding technology is successfully applied to NiUW’s world-renowned products, then the company’s competitiveness and markets will be significantly increased. In order to develop and test the proposed incremental production method, we will develop new functional materials dedicated to laser welding with the LMD (Laser Metal Deposition) technique, develop procedures for drilling for production with incremental manufacturing technology (3D printing), develop an effective automated technological process dedicated to welding workpieces (in multi-bit large diameter drills), producing jointed PDC cutters and repair elements (in drills type). The common denominator of these research tasks is the incremental manufacturing technology (3D printing).
