In 01/2020, a novel virus called SARS-CoV-2 was identified as the cause of severe lung disease. Since then, the pathogen has led to cases of severe respiratory disease COVID-19 worldwide and has been classified as a pandemic by the WHO since 11.03.20. So far, 22 vaccines against the virus have been released worldwide. Effective medicines for the treatment of COVID-19 sufferers are lacking so far. COVID-19 can severely affect not only the lungs, but also other organ systems. Therefore, various medications + therapeutic approaches are necessary, taking into account the severity and different stages of the disease. The development of targeted drugs can only succeed in the long term if we know the patho-mechanisms underlying the COVID-19 infection. The Department of Medicine of JLU has a special role in deciphering the patho-mechanics of SARS-CoV-2 with its expertise, in particular through its research areas in the field of cardiopulmonary system and infection/immunity. Research on anti-pandemic and pandemic impact will be strengthened and advanced through the replacement of the central sorting device and the new acquisition of the phase-contrast capable device.
