Road I-8 Kalotina — Sofia ring road is located west of Sofia and is part of the “main” TEN-T network. Road modernisation is needed in order to meet transport demand and ensure the safe movement of vehicles. By RMC No 959 of 31 December 18, the road from the Serbian border to Sofia was defined as the “Europe motorway”, which is divided into three sections: • From km 1+ 000 to km 15+ 500 financed by the CEF. Construction is expected to end spring 2023 • From km 15+ 500 to km 32+ 447.20 — modernisation of the section along the existing route is completed 2021. The existing road has been extended to the required gauge and its elements have been improved in certain sections. • From km 32+ 447.20 to km 48+ 903 — The track is developing on a new terrain. This project includes the construction of the last two sections of the Europe Motorway from km 15+ 500 to km 32+ 447.20 (length 16.947 km) and from km 32+ 447.20 to km 48+ 903 (16.456 km), with a total length of 33.403 km. • Section from km 15+ 500 to km 32+ 447.20: — Road junctions: 1 Slivnitsa 1 — Diamond 2 Slivnitsa 2 — Full Knight — Road connection Road III-811-Kalotina — Large facilities: Overpasses; Underpasses; Bridge over the river Slivnishka; Overpass over the railway line; — Noise barriers and networks for birds — Traffic Management Centre — Rest Zones — Emergency Braking Areas • Section from km 32+ 447.20 to km 48+ 903: — Road junctions: 1 Kostinbrod — two roundabouts 2 Marble — Madnesselina — Road links: 1 Road I-8-Kalotina and Kalotina-Road I-8 2 Sofia-Kostinbrod and Kostinbrod-Kalotina — Large facilities: Underpasses; Bridges over the river Belishka and Crna bar; Underpass on the railway line; Viaduct; Overpass — Shumoprotective barriers The project will increase the capacity and safety of the road, solving the problems with the ability to choose speed and difficulties in overtaking. The project will contribute to removing bottlenecks in infrastructure and improving the quality of services and continuity of transport flows.
