Contaminated sites containing hazardous substances are a threat to the environment in all countries around the Baltic Sea. The reason and type of contaminant varies between countries but could be from old industrial or military sites. Contaminated sites are very numerous in all countries participating in the project and there is a joint requirement for better knowledge about how to work with the problem in a more efficient and high quality way. The number of performed remediation needs to increase to obtain a healthier environment and improved water quality in the Baltic Sea. There is a need for cross border working to establish best practices in remediation and obtain improved and faster remediation of contaminated sites. All partners have unique experience, competences and knowledge and by combining them we will find new and innovative solutions within the field of contaminated sites. The overall objective of the project is to decrease the impact of hazardous substances to the environment from contaminated sites. By decreasing leakage from contaminated sites to ground and surface water there will be a reduced inflow of hazardous substances and toxins into the Baltic Sea. The project will contribute to the result indicator through three parts- sustainable remediation, management methods and innovative technical tools for visualisation. By testing and developing cost effective and sustainable remediation methods the project contributes to make the remediation more sustainable, increase the remediation rate and thereby improve the environment in the Baltic Sea.By jointly working with management methods and innovative technical tools, more efficient methods and new solutions for prioritisation, visualisation, registration and information of contaminated sites will be developed. All three parts of the project will contribute to the result indicator by creating solutions for improving the situation and reduce the transport of hazardous substances to the Baltic Sea.
