The global climate change causes increase of the frequent periods of water shortages and water abundant periods which are affecting both side of the Hungary-Serbia border, and flood hazards have emerged many times in the cross-border region resulting from its geographical position. At the same time, available drinking water significantly decreased. The project aims at improving the region's water management, increasing safety and protection of people living in the border region, contributing to ecological water management, having higher quantity and quality water, and thus improving the socio-economic situation of the municipality and the border region. The project includes several elements aimed at resolving these issues. Between the 18+800 - 19+331 km cross-sections parallel with the Domaszéki main canal, a 531 meters long DN 900 HOBAS pressure pipe will be built. In the 19+331 km cross-section a stilling basin and shutter weir will be built. Water will be delivered from the pressure pipe will be accomplished between 19+331- 20+580 km sections of Domaszéki main canal, and the works will involve sediment dredging along 1,249 meter length of the canal and reduction of the canal bottom by 50 cm. A new regulation structure will be built in 20+445 km cross-section of Domaszéki main canal. Between the 20+580 – 23+996 km cross-sections of the Domaszéki main canal will be rebuilt to dual-purpose channel. The works will involve: dredging, construction of the canal levee, and reconstruction of water retention works. Within this section a new pumping station will be built (Ivánszéki pump station 20+580 km). Additionally, the project will develop a monitoring system aimed at preventing droughts and water shortages which will measure hydrological conditions in the area. In terms of waste management, the project intends to increase capacities of a waste management plant by reconstruction, repurposing and construction of new facilities and purchase of new, efficient pieces of equipment. Thus, the population will have high-quality water. In terms of flood prevention and protection against it, the water management authorities from both sides of the border will share professional techniques and supplies. On the Serbian side, a new protection technique and relevant training will be implemented among professionals and volunteers from both countries. The aim of this initiative is improvement of technical and personnel resources for flood prevention on both sides of the border through joint actions and procurement of the tube barrier for flood protection – a quick, lightweight and highly effective alternative which is easily transferable between the two countries, if needed.
