Nachbarsprache & buurcultuur

The aim of the project is to strengthen the cooperation in the Rhine-Waal Euregio. Mutual learning and understanding of the respective language and culture is achieved through a regular and sustainable exchange between pupils and teachers. This way, the next generation learns how to best make use of the possibilities of cross-border cooperation. The border region Euregio is used as a chance and the barrier effect of the border is broken down. The project takes advantage of the close proximity of the target language and culture of the border region and uses this for real encounters: pupils and teachers are given the opportunity to experience the respective target language and culture as authentic language. German and Dutch are not merely learnt but experienced and applied. In order to fulfil this, the exchange of pupils and teachers is organized on a regular and long-term basis. Participating are: regional secondary schools that offer German and/or Dutch as a foreign language, as well as middle and comprehensive schools for the age groups of 11/12 to 18/19 year olds. Over the course of the project, a minimum of 50 exchanges of school classes and teachers (comprising of approximately 8.500 pupils and 360 teachers) will be carried out. Apart from this, the Euregio secondary school (Kranenburg) will – under scientific supervision – serve as for a bilingual, bi-national approach with German and Dutch qualifications. All school exchange projects are supported by setting up a database of useful material and by providing certified workshops and training seminars for teachers and school management which discuss up-to-date pedagogical methods and thus improve the academic exchange between schools and science. All measures are evaluated and further improved through close monitoring.
