The implementation of the project proposal will contribute to the improvement of ambient air quality in the municipality of Gorna Oryahovitsa, by reducing the excessive levels of fine particulate matter (PM10) from household heating as one of the main sources of air pollution. The specific objective of the project is to replace the heating appliances of solid fuels (wood and coal) used by the population with alternative forms of heating. The project is two-step. In the first phase, all preparatory activities necessary to implement the investment will be carried out. A survey will be conducted on the attitudes among residents who are heated on solid fuel to replace the heating appliances they use. A training campaign will be held among the population on the possibilities for replacing solid fuel heating devices, explaining the possible alternative forms of heating and the conditions for inclusion of those who want to in the replacement scheme. Analyses, criteria and mechanisms for the prioritisation of households by neighbourhood in the application of alternatives will be developed with a view to contributing to reducing the amount of PM10 emissions. Through on-site visits to the sites/households the actual technical parameters will be examined with a view to replacing the devices. The first stage will end with the preparation of a comprehensive vision of the approach that the municipality will apply for the replacement of solid fuel heating devices. During the second stage, a procedure for selecting a contractor will be carried out and the dismantling of the used heating devices and the delivery and installation of the new heating appliances/systems will be carried out according to the agreed parameters. The environmental benefits of the project will be reflected in the amount of PM10 emissions saved.
