Leeuwarden City Centre has applied for a subsidy of more than EUR 5.4 million from the European Social Fund (ESF) for all Frisian municipalities. Some 3.5 million grants will be spent by the municipalities over the next 2 years to help people in long-term benefits back to work. In particular, young people without initial qualifications or with multi-problems and people aged 50 and over who have become unemployed more than a year ago as a result of the economic crisis are unemployed. In addition, all Frisian municipalities will jointly develop initiatives to guide Statusholders to work. Approximately 2 tonnes of subsidy from Brussels is reserved for this purpose. Another Frisian initiative is the Werkvoucher Scheme; employers who hire an unemployed young person or an unemployed person over 50 years old are entitled to a placement fee of EUR 3,000. It is expected that over the next 2 years, employers will help 700 people to work through this Werkvoucher Scheme. Finally, 3 tonnes of this grant is also available to train people without work for volunteering in the framework of Cultural Capital 2018.
