Cooperation between municipalities in the labour market region of Zeeland has taken shape in recent years. A step has been taken from occasional consultation and cooperation towards a situation where knowledge and experience are shared and cooperation is sought when it contributes to solving a particular problem. Cooperation is always assessed on functionality. There is still room for customisation for municipalities within the frameworks set together. The labour market region Zeeland has three subregions: Oosterschelde, Walcheren and Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Due to geographical and demographic circumstances, each sub-region has the scope to make its own choices. Within these cooperation frameworks, the municipalities in the labour market region of Zeeland are jointly using subsidies from the European Social Fund (ESF). This money is used to carry out additional activities aimed at re-integrating people who face difficulties in gaining a place on their own in the labour market. In the ESF project ‘Getting Started in Zeeland 17-18’, an important place has been given to activities targeting young people. There remains a need to invest in guiding young people towards the labour market. In particular, vulnerable young people face difficulties in completing (professional) education and finding sustainable employment. However, the ESF grant is not only used to support young people. Other groups at a disadvantage in the labour market, including older people and barriers to work, are also carrying out activities aimed at supporting job-seeking through ESF grants. The ESF project will start in January 2017 and last a total of 24 months. After this project period, the labour market region Zeeland will again use ESF funds to further invest in supporting vulnerable groups into work.
