Fiber to Gävleborg is a collective name for several broadband projects owned and coordinated by Region Gävleborg. Together, the county’s municipalities build fibre for approximately SEK 250 million between 2015 and 2023. The objective is to increase the possibility for SMEs to access fast broadband. The municipalities in Fiber to the Gävleborg projects have selected, on the basis of their broadband strategies and IT infrastructure plans, the locations that will be connected to fibre networks and thus be covered by the projects. Fiber for Gävleborg 6 is the sixth fibre project that Region Gävleborg has applied for from the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth since October 2015. We have already been granted five fibre projects in which all the county’s municipalities participate. Fiber to Gävleborg 6 pulls fiber up to towns and villages but connects no properties. The project is a collaboration project between Region Gävleborg, Sandviken Energi AB, Helsinge Net Ovanåker AB and Bollnäs Energi AB. We have a steering group, project group and reference group. We will build fibre for around 11.5 million and this will increase the possibility for the municipality’s small and medium-sized enterprises to access high-speed broadband. The project will be funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Sandviken Energi, Helsinge Net Ovanåker, Bollnäs Energi and Region Gävleborg’s regional development funds. Gävleborg County has a regional plan for broadband 2019-2025 where the goal is: — By 2020, 95 % of all households and businesses in Gävleborg should have access to broadband of at least 100 Mbps — By 2023, the whole of Gävleborg should have access to stable and good-quality mobile services — By 2025, Gävleborg should have access to fast broadband and 98 % of all households and businesses should have access to 1 Gbit/s o 1.9 % of all households and companies should have access to 100 Mbps/s o 0.1 % of all households and businesses should have access to 30 Mbps/s high capacity broadband and quality is of great importance for a positive development throughout Gävleborg. Communication is a prerequisite for growth and sustainable development. Broadband is a digital highway that enables fast communication and access to information and services. The target group of the project is small and medium-sized enterprises in towns without high-speed broadband. By establishing new optical fibre cables to locations that today lack fibre networks, we increase the companies’ conditions for growth, competitiveness and trade.
