Summary Title of the PROJECT project: Sustainable transport development interventions in the eastern gate of the city of Zalaegerszeg will be submitted by the Municipality of Zalaegerszeg under the title “Sustainable transport development interventions at the eastern gate of the city centre” under the title 6.4. Development of sustainable urban transport in the context of the project 6.4.1-15. Only a project idea is outlined and presented in your grant application. The exact technical content of the planned investment will be developed during the project development phase. 1. Within the framework of the project, we want to implement two main project elements: 1.1. Development of a bicycle path in the eastern part of the city: The municipality of Zalaegerszeg places great emphasis on creating a liveable city, including the possibility to travel by bicycle. Since previous years, the city has continuously expanded its network of cycle paths, depending on the possibilities and own resources. However, due to the construction of a bicycle road network, safe and comfortable cycling transport in the municipality and its surroundings was only partially solved. Zalaegerszeg’s cycle path network currently connects only certain parts of the city to the city centre, so the project element — in line with the ZMJV Bicycle Network Plan — aims to connect the city centre with the shopping centers in the eastern part of the city and to be accessible by bicycle from the residential areas without hindrance and safety. The trail of the hiking and cycling path to be built runs from the bicycle road to Berzsenyi D. Road, next to Balatoni út, along the southern part of the road, all the way to the junction of Praktiker and Zone Shopping Center. The development provides the opportunity for the employees and buyers of many shops, commercial units and shops to have a safe cycling approach, thus making the whole city’s transport network more cycling friendly. Planned interventions and affected road sections: Taking into account the recommendations of the Bicycle Network Plan prepared in the framework of previous projects, the material project element makes available to cyclists one of the most visited traffic areas of the city. A coherent network creates a safe, comfortable and accessible transport conditions. It is necessary to provide space for pedestrian and cycling surfaces on the physical section. The starting point of the planned facility is the existing cycle path on Berzsenyi Road. With the reconstruction of Balatoni út, Sport u., Damjanich street circular junction, the safe passage of cyclists in the eastern direction will be realised. The bi-directional cycle path then extends to the entrance to Zone shopping centre by widening the footpath next to Balatoni út. The indoor cycling road crosses the road connections of the petrol station Mol, Euronics and KFC, and will be passed through the southern section of roundabout 74-76. We also want to use traffic equipment to facilitate safe cycling. The main sections of the planned cycle path will be implemented on properties owned by the Municipality of Zalaegerszeg Municipality. The trail of some elements also concerns private property, which is acquired by purchase or expropriation until the completion of the project development phase. The project element is intended to be implemented in the framework of an activity that is individually eligible under point 3.1.1/A/a of the call for proposals. The development implements point 3.2./Aa of the call: The transport road network of the entire part of the settlement becomes cycling friendly with the construction of these bicycle traffic facilities. The development trail includes both residential and traffic areas from Berzsenyi D. Street to Zone Shopping Center in the eastern part of the city centre. As a result of the investment, the transport road network in the intervention area becomes cycling friendly. In the case of cycling-friendly developments, the preparation of the bicycle traffic network plan is mandatory, which is available in our case. 1.2. Road safety investment at the junction of Balatoni út, Sport and Damjanich Street: The sustainability of transport depends on optimal needs in terms of both direct environmental pressure and resource use. One of the most critical points of Zalaegerszeg from the point of view of road safety is Balatoni út in the eastern part of the city centre, its round traffic with Sport and Damjanich Street and its complex junction environment. Around 6 node branches are located near the roundabout. The problem of the current road network design is multifaceted. Some cross-sectional, partly junction and road network problems arise.
