Development of the Bogád-Szederkény cycling route

The aim of the project is to develop the “BK-14” cycling route registered as of regional importance by the study entitled “Proposed development of the National Bicycle Route” in Baranya County. This will make it possible to connect the two national cycle routes (BK-1, BK-5) between the county routes belonging to the core network of the two National Bicycle Roads. Road “BK-1” is the so-called “Three River Bicycle Route” — EuroVelo 13rd International “Iron Curtain” cycling route. The Three River Bicycle Route runs from Barcs to Drávaszabolcs to Mohács. The route of EuroVelo 13 “Iron Curtain” is the same, but the latter continues from Mohács to Nagybaracska. The “BK-5” route (Bonyhád) — Mecseknádasd — Pécsvárad — Pécs — Szigetvár — (Barcs), which between Pécs and Bonyhád, the old road 6 is currently marked as a cycling route. Route BK-14 passes through the municipality of Pécs (BK5) — Bogád — Romonya — Ellend — Hásságy — Italian — Belvárdgyula — Szederkény (BK13). The sections to be designated between settlements and to be built make it possible to connect the county seat between Pécs and the eastern part of the county. With the development and expansion of cycling conditions, the conditions of cycling in settlements, as well as mobility opportunities for people living in small settlements, are significantly improved from a professional and road safety point of view. The share of cyclists as the main means of transport during daily journeys increases, thus contributing to the achievement of priority result indicator 3 of the Territorial and Settlement Development Operational Programme. A cycling route will be established between the municipalities concerned — in line with the eligible activity defined in Section 3.1.1 of the Call for Proposals (A) Cycling-friendly development (b). The project is implemented in a consortium between the Municipality of Szederkény and the Municipality Office of Baranya County (BMÖH). The task of the BMÖH is to coordinate the preparation of the project, to perform project management tasks and to implement awareness-raising. The planning area covers almost 20 km from the administrative border of Pécs-Bogád to Szederkény. The population affected by the development (Bogád 1099, Romonya 537, Ellend 226, Hásságy 306, Italian 640, Belvárdgyula 438, Szederkény 1732) directly affects 4978 people. The local area concerned belongs to the districts of Buly and Pécs. Despite the fact that the two districts are among the more advanced in terms of economic and social indicators in the county, mainly due to the district seats, the vast majority of the affected municipalities face high unemployment, the problem of population loss and poor mobility situation. The ever-decreasing population, the ageing age structure and the lack of mobility pose serious problems for the inhabitants of the settlements. Due to the constraints of public transport, sustainable transport development is almost the only option for development in terms of mobility. The unemployment rate in municipalities is high, the poor public transport situation and the lack of major employers pose a major challenge for those living in settlements. The low employment of the working population also poses a serious problem in the planning area, in the municipalities affected by the development. Localities are characterised by low labour supply and therefore workers are forced to commute between their place of residence and their workplace. Adapting to public transport services and walking to time-bound work hinders the mobility of the population. Road 57 between Pécs and Mohács is not suitable for cycling because of the significant traffic (5-10,000 E/day). Alternatively, Pécs — Bogád — Romonya — Ellend — Hásságy — Italian route (road 5611). There is no alternative route from the Italian junction to Szederkény on Route 57, but on this section there was an authorisation plan for a bicycle route. In previous years, the development of bicycles only took place in Szederkény settlement with tender support, which implemented a bicycle connection with Bólly. The safe cycling route was implemented by designating the old access road (No. 5704) and by constructing new cycle paths. From Szederkény to Bóly to Babarc and Villány the bicycle transport was arranged. In line with the requirements set out in the call, the objective of this project is primarily to establish a continuous cycle traffic network between municipalities without interruption, which also contributes to increasing labour mobility, strengthening cycling traffic linked indirectly to public transport — maintaining the health of the population, ensuring safe and healthy work — the development of a professional cycling culture already widespread in Western Europe — through the reduction of individual car use, reducing CO2 emissions, reducing climate change and reducing environmental pressures. The project will reduce motor vehicle traffic
