The aim of the complex development of cycling tourism in the Sió Canal is to motivate as many people as possible in their free time to walk nature, to be more coached, healthier, and to learn about the hidden historical, cultural and natural beauty of Hungary, based on the popularity and social embedding of cycling. It is important to improve the relationship between the different walk modes (cycling, hiking canoe, rider, nature) through the development of stops, and to improve the ability to generate income from the enhancement of intermodality. The aim is to indirectly increase the number of nights spent in one location/region and to increase the direct and indirect revenues from the provision of services through the development and networking of individual stops. A significant number of settlements along the Sió region can be found in underdeveloped settlements with poor economic situation, often with degraded settlements and public areas in poor condition. Most of the roads connecting the target settlements are of low capacity, making use of the possibilities offered by the built parallel roads to Sió for cyclists. The present tender, which supports the infrastructure conditions of cycling tourism, is in line with the water tourism tender of the Tolna County Municipality, thus creating the joint infrastructure development of the various tourism products. There is also a TDM organisation in the region: the Tolna Treasure Tourism Association, as a regional tourism destination management organisation, supports the tourist goals of the county. The Association started its work in January 2016, resulting in a tourism analysis, concept and strategy for the region. For all tourism applications, it is essential that it fits into a regional tourism concept, which is why the Tolna Treasure Tourism Association has prepared it. In recent years there has been no regional organisation covering a county, so the association’s priority objective is to compensate for the accumulated backlog in recent years. Within the framework of this tender, a bicycle road (4.5 km) will be built from the administrative border of Szekszárd and Sióagárd to the centre of the village of Harc, which is part of the national cycle path No. 65 designated next to Sió. In the field of combat, the cycling route connects to the Fighting-Simontornya side road, which, due to its low traffic, is able to serve as a route for cyclists. A wheel road is also built in the interior of Simontornya on several sections, where traffic data make this necessary. At Simon’s Tower, the cycling route is connected to the Simontornya-Ozora road. As a whole, there is a 62-kilometre contiguous cycling route from Sióagárd to Ozora, which directly affects many tourist attractions: Sióagárd-Leányvár (cellar village), Kölesd (old county of the castle), Borjád (beer tower, Petőfi Memorial beak), Pálfa-Felsőrácegrespuszta (born place of Gyula Illyés and Ervin Lázár’s primary school), Simontornya (castle), Ozora (castle). In addition to the route, stops are also set up. In some places where the cycling route runs directly along the Sió (Harc, Kölesd, Sárszentlőrinc, Pálfa, Simontornya), the cycling resting place is created together with the stops related to water tourism. Where, on the other hand, there is a distance of several kilometres between Sió and the side road designated for cycling in parallel (Pálfa-Felsőrácegres, Medina), there is an independent bicycle stop. Along the route, cooperation with the relevant service providers (mainly catering, accommodation, bicycle repairs) will take place for the convenience of tourists. Along the route, the number of tourists and their spending is expected to increase after the project has been completed. An existing building will not be refurbished during the project.
