Railway Interoperability of Budapest: preparation for the establishment of a new railway connecting tunnel, the development of headyards and Budapest line sections, the railway interoperability of Budapest and the development of the operating conditions of the railway operation

The aim of the development is to improve the capacity and efficiency of the railway operation by revising the railway station’s fixed interoperability-limiting system, which was inherited from more than a century ago, and thus to increase the role of railways in suburban and urban transport by making better use of the potential of the existing network. All these steps will help to improve the overall competitiveness of sustainable, environmentally friendly, public transport modes in the central region of Hungary. In addition, thanks to the development of the transport infrastructure, the very valuable areas of Budapest, located in a favourable position, will be able to accommodate new metropolitan functions. A new urban development axis will be created, which will become a space for improving the quality of life in cities and stimulating economic activity through synergistic cooperation between different sectors. To achieve the above objectives, a detailed feasibility study and cost benefit analysis (hereinafter referred to as RMT, feasibility study or study), including urban, transport, railway and environmental aspects, will be carried out in the framework of the project, which should propose: “a) to extend Budapest’s East-West Railway Interoperability, to build the”railway connecting tunnel“leading to the Nyugati Railway Station through the Déli Railway Station area and to transform the growing Western Railway Station into a central railway station, b) to integrate the Southern Circular Railroad connected to the Southern connecting railway bridge co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) with new stops in the new Budapest railway network concept, C) as a result of the developments referred to in subparagraphs (a) and (b) the head railway station development concept adapted to the changing role for the Keleti railway station, d) the change of function of the railway rust areas along the headyards and the inclusive railway line sections, the use for urban development purposes, in particular the entire area of the South Railway Station, which is gradually released as a result of the achievement of the development objectives, and the western railway station and the Keleti railway station, as well as the areas that can be liberated along the adjacent sections of the railway line, e) the comprehensive new scheduling concept necessary for the operation of a modern railway operation in line with the infrastructure objectives referred to in points (a) to (d) and the operational concept of the location of the railway storage, maintenance and repair infrastructure resulting from the restructuring of the railway network, f) new railway stops improving urban connections at the intersections of suburban railway lines with the public transport network in the capital, and densely populated urban areas.” The result of the development is a detailed feasibility study and a cost-benefit analysis based on the above criteria.
