Since the entry into operation of GYSEV on the Sopron — Szombathely — Szentgotthárd railway line, there has been an EU co-financing of CCS — enabling the deployment of ERTMS/ETCS systems, both for station and line interlocking equipment. Regulation 2012/88/EU of the European Union on the technical specification for interoperability relating to the control-command and signalling subsystem of the trans-European rail system provides for the trajectory of ERTMS Corridors to be equipped with ERTMS systems and the projects for which the deployment of ERTMS is mandatory. According to Regulation (EU) No 2012/88: “The fitting of ERTMS/ETCS should be mandatory for railway infrastructure development projects that are supported by Union financial support to facilitate the new installation or modernisation of the train protection part of the CCS unit. The equipment shall be carried out in the framework of a project supported by the European Union. In addition, the volu-men of the North-South freight transit through West-Hungary justifies that rail transport should be an attractive alternative to road transport. To this end, GYSEV has refurbished the Sopron — Szombathely and Szom-bathely — Szentgotthárd railway lines in terms of track, tram traction and communication. However, the deployment of the ERTMS system on the railway line, i.e. the GSM-R system, which also allows for safety data communication and the ETCS system, is necessary for the complete renovation. The ETCS (European Train Control System) is itself a train control system in terms of its essential functions. With the construction of the ETCS system, it is possible to supervise the running trains on the previously electrified and refurbished Sopron — Szombat-hely — Szentgotthárd line and to ensure the safety of trains in a wide variety of traffic and operational situations. In the course of the project, on the line, at the station main beacons and at the line crossings, balises are installed, which perform the positioning of trains and the entry and exit of the system. A so-called RBC (radio block centre) will also be installed which can directly control the speed and the distance of the trains, based on the in-formations obtained from the insurance system after the installation of appropriate communication channels and interfaces.
