With this project, the Forster Gyula National Centre for Heritage Protection and Asset Management aims to develop the Wenckheim Castle and Park in Szabadknakós for tourism purposes. The castle is one of the most outstanding architectural and cultural heritage of the area, the construction of which was started by Frigyes Wenckheim and Krisztina Wenckheim. Based on the plans of Miklós Ybl, the castle was built in a period from 1875 to 1879 in a German neo-renaissance eclectic style. The main building of the representative castle with a one-story loggia terrace is connected by a loggia corridor to the maid’s wing. In the representative castle you can find a chapel, a dining room, a library, a women’s music parlor, a men’s parlor with pipes, a living room and a bedroom with a bed-cab with interior elements representing the life and habits of the former aristocracy. The castle is surrounded by an impressive park of his age. In front of the facade of the castle there was a French garden and a landscape garden in other parts of the park. The marsh cypress group accompanying the artificial garden lake, the huge plane in front of the castle and the stalked oaks, chestnut rows of ancient times, as well as the centuries-old white poplar line, are of outstanding value. The castle park in the 32 hectare area has been protected since 1949. After World War II, the manor family left the castle complex, a year later an agricultural school moved into the building. Currently, a limited number of representative spaces of the building, largely unused, can be viewed. At the same time, the tourist potential of the site is illustrated by the fact that 10,000 visitors visit the current minimum tourist infrastructure every year. The fundamental aim of the development is to strengthen the Wenckheim Castle and Castle Park in Szabadknakós, which has a centuries-old history, to improve the conditions of tourist reception and to develop its unique tourist profile, thereby further strengthening the tourist attraction of the destination, thereby contributing to the economic recovery of the region, the emergence of entrepreneurial capital and the reduction of unemployment. In order to achieve this goal, as a result of the development, the castle aims to revive the grandeur’s romance and the traditions of the lord. In addition to the use of innovative technology, the castle also focuses on the provision of traditional interpretation tools and interactive experiences and programs in real space and time. The amount available under the project is HUF 1.5 billion, a significant part of which will be used for the implementation of technical and architectural preservation, spatial optimisation and reconstruction of the castle park. The remaining amount will be used to increase the range of tourism experiences based on historical-scientific foundations to promote self-sustaining operation. The minimum annual number of visitors determined on the basis of the total cost of the project (at all times compared to the base year) is 34,483 persons, the fulfilment of which is not only a requirement for a tender, but also for long-term competitiveness and sustainability. We are looking forward to visiting the castle primarily from tourists arriving in Békés county (Gyula, Békéscsaba, Oroshaza) whose main motivation is supposed to be recreation, the use of wellness or medical tourism services and the consumption of various gastronomic experiences, but at least secondary to cultural and historical interest. The priority target group is characterised by the preference of traditional content and presentations in cultural consumption over innovative elements, rather than urbanised environments, they prefer rural environments suitable for recreation and recreation. With regard to age groups, we pay special attention to the active senior age group and the so-called “slow” tourists during the product development process, both in the development of the experience offering and in the preference of traditional forms of appearance. However, in the interests of economical operation and sustainability, the needs of young people with special motivations (marriage, class excursions, children travelling with seniors) are also taken into account. Building on the existing scientific documentation, the castle theme that provides tourist attraction guides visitors to the castle through the traditions of the lord and romantic, lover stories. The castle of Szabadknakós, which presents the traditions of the high lord (traditional lord farming, grandeur celebrations, high lord entertainment and everyday life) and romantic history, traditional marriages, would focus on the expectations of active senior age groups and slow tourism lovers at all levels. The two main themes (romantics and tradition) take different forms — presenting and teaching, playfully and interactively, as well as through the programs — throughout the castle. Tradition, tradition, not only in the themes and pro...
