Development of the Museum Quarter and Romkert for tourism purposes linked to the Sopron Castle Wall

The grant application concerns the development of the Museum Quarter and Romkert for tourism purposes linked to the Sopron Castle Wall. The direct aim of the project is to create a museum district connected to the Sopron castle wall, to create and further develop its unique tourist offer elements, as well as to the tourism development of the Várfalsétány and the Romkert, which in the long term can further strengthen the tourist attraction of the destination, thereby contributing to the economic recovery of the region, the emergence of entrepreneurial capital and the reduction of unemployment. With the project to be implemented, based on the needs of the target group, we intend to implement a development that can demonstrate the outstanding cultural heritage of the buildings and structures concerned in an interactive way, using traditional and modern tools. The reasons for the development are the following problems identified in the analysis of the situation: In the present situation, the three houses do not form a whole in their external or internal systems. The inner passage between the buildings and the visitor routes are complicated and there is no suitable reception space. It’s confusing that the gates of the buildings are only the gates of the Storno House. Most of the exhibitions in Fabricius House do not provide a lasting experience in today’s sense, modern presentation tools, interactive elements and experience orientation are missing. There are no exhibitions in the General’s House, currently the building is not open to visitors. The three buildings are not accessible and the Fabricius House and the General House do not include the basic service functions (visitor’s toilet, toilet, cloakroom, etc.). The Continental Garden connected to the buildings is neglected, unbuilt and unutilised in its present state. The tourist attraction of the Várfalsétány and the Romkert is low, and the section of the castle wall next to Romkert is dangerous for accidents. During the project, the buildings of the Fabricius House, the General House and the Storno House will be connected, with which we form a museum unit. In connection with the buildings, behind them, in the width of the former castle wall, there is a museum hanging garden, which is also renewed during the present development. In order to create a suitable guest reception, the General House’s courtyard is covered, within which a central reception area is established (including: ticket office and information desk, visitors’ bathroom with accessible toilet and baby-mama room, wardrobe, museum shop). The main entrance of the connected buildings will thus be the General’s House, through which the main square, the three houses and the Fire Tower are connected. We plan to install a barrier-free elevator in the reception area in the courtyard of the General House. In addition to the barrier-free elevator, the accessibility of all three buildings will be realised. Server functions and visitor paths are assigned by means of information communication to inform visitors and to make it as easy as possible to inform visitors. The aim of the project is to increase the attractiveness of tourism, in order to improve the tourist attraction of the Várfalsány along the border of the historic city centre and the Romkert connected to the castle wall. In connection with the exhibitions of the buildings concerned, our goal is to use modern demonstration tools, tangible and trialable and interactive elements, with the help of which we intend to realise highly attractive, experience-oriented exhibitions. In this spirit, the renovation of existing exhibition spaces, the creation of new exhibition spaces, the creation of exhibition spaces from the apartments in the buildings, the renewal of old exhibitions, the implementation of new exhibitions, as well as the implementation of function changes in certain rooms of the buildings, and the creation of new functions. Expected results of the project: An increase in the number of foreign and domestic visitors of the buildings concerned; The seasonality of the city’s tourism is decreasing; The time spent by tourists in the museum and in the city is increasing, in parallel with their spending on tourism, thereby increasing the city’s tourist income; The region’s economy is recovering thanks to the multiplier effect of tourism; In the long term, there is an increase in the number of enterprises active in tourism, which reduces unemployment, improves the profitability of the population and generates revenues for private and public institutions; The historic heritage of the Fabricius House, the General House, the Storno House and the Várfalsétány and the Romkert are preserved in the long term by the buildings renovated for tourist purposes. Quantifiable results: Number of new workers: 12 persons; Target number of visits per year during the maintenance period: 46 324 persons (base value: 11 841 people, plus visitors generated by the project 3...
