The overall objective of the project is to reduce the amount of landfilled biodegradable waste generated on the territory of the municipality of Montana through separate collection and recovery of green and/or biodegradable municipal waste. This objective is in line with the waste management hierarchy and the European and national targets for the gradual reduction of the amount of biodegradable municipal waste destined for landfilling. The project also contributes to the improvement of resource efficiency, as a result of the investment the waste will become a resource — compost. The specific objective of the project is to provide the necessary infrastructure for separate collection and recovery of biodegradable household waste in the municipality.The project will build a composting plant with a capacity of 6150 tonnes/year, which will be located on the territory of the Montana Regional landfill for non-hazardous waste, in the “Nededest” site seven kilometers south-east of the town of Montana, the village of Krapcheve, Montana municipality. As a result of the implementation of the project, a composting plant will be built, which will process separately collected green and/or biodegradable municipal waste from the settlements on the territory of the municipality and produce high quality compost. The necessary trucks and containers will also be provided for the introduction of the system for separate collection and transport to the composting plant of the collected waste. The socio-economic benefits of the project are aimed at improving the quality of the environment for the residents of Montana municipality by reducing the harmful emissions associated with the landfilling of waste; providing a new type of waste service to residents and businesses in the municipality and high-quality compost. New jobs needed to operate the infrastructure will also be created.
