Institution of the EMBL Partner

A partner institution of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), of which Lithuania is a member since 2019, will be established at Vilnius University Centre for Life Sciences (VU GMC), where fundamental and applied research on genome editing CRISPR technology development will be carried out, consolidating the discoveries of Lithuanian scientists in this field. Within the scope of the project, a scientific entity will be created, consisting of groups of scientists at international level that will carry out research in the thematic areas related to the application of CRISPR-Cas9 technologies in various research in the field of biomedical, biotechnology and natural sciences, as well as in the field of computational biology, which should develop and provide access to virtual genomic research infrastructures. Modern and specialised laboratory equipment for research will also be purchased, which will significantly strengthen the potential of VU GMC’s scientific infrastructure. The project will contribute to increasing the country’s scientific competences at international level and promoting innovative potential in the field of health technologies and biotechnology. During the implementation of the project, highly qualified international specialists will be attracted, who will initiate and develop new research directions and technologies for genome editing, facilitate international cooperation, implement models of organisation and management of scientific institution based on modern international good practice and ensure the international dissemination of the knowledge created.
