The project will implement the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) (hereinafter referred to as the WFD), Marine Strategy Framework Directive 2008/56/EC (hereinafter “MSFD”) and relevant Lithuanian legislation for the improvement of the status of surface water bodies (rivers, lakes, ponds, the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea). The project directly implements measures 3.5.1, 3.5.2, 3.5.3, 8.6 and 18.7.1 of the Action Plan for the implementation of the Water Sector Development Programme 2017-2023 approved by Order No D1-375/3D-312 of the Minister for the Environment and the Minister for Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania of 5 May 2017 approving the Action Plan for the implementation of the Water Sector Development Programme 2017-2023 (hereinafter ‘the Action Plan for the implementation of the Water Sector Development Programme 2017-2023’). Part of the project activities are devoted to the assessment of the ecological and chemical status of surface water bodies. The monitoring of ecological and chemical status indicators of water bodies is important for the analysis of the current situation, the selection of measures to improve the status of the water bodies and the assessment of the effectiveness of the measures taken. The results of the research carried out during the project will allow to assess the status of water bodies according to the indicators of fish, aquatic flora and dangerous substances. The project also includes activities to assess the status of the marine environment in accordance with the MSFD requirements. The project will carry out studies to assess the state of the marine environment against indicators of marine reef habitats and wintering seabirds. Studies carried out in the marine environment will make it possible to assess the effectiveness of measures already implemented to achieve good status of the marine environment and the level of impact of human activities, and the programme of measures to achieve good status of the marine environment will be updated in the light of the results. During the project, one of the marine measures envisaged, the extent of the impact of fishing fixed nets on seabirds and mammals, and proposals to reduce the impact of fishing regulation measures will be prepared.
