Silver Economy — Turning the Silver Tsunami Into A Silver Lining International Project

The number of older people will increase and the EU and WHO have launched programmes to address the challenges of an ageing population while changing the idea of the elderly as a need for care. According to Silver Economy, population ageing is seen as an opportunity for economic activity. The growth of the silver economy opens up new opportunities for the development of products and services in a wide range of industries. According to EU programmes, Silver Economy targets all over 50 years of age. Investing in Silver Economy will require companies to have business and product development expertise to formulate their services for the customer group concerned. Many existing services and products do not as such serve the needs of the elderly. Better targeted services and products support and strengthen the performance and quality of life of older consumers. Supporting the functional capacity of older people is important for society as a whole. The development of Silver Economy North Karelia started with a preparatory project in December 2017. As a result of the preparatory project, the expertise of the management and personnel of companies in the area of Silver Economy as well as service design and business has increased. Participating companies have identified ageing customers as their potential customer group and have a strategic goal to develop their services as age-friendly. The study project found that several international companies have been targeting their services to older customers for years. The aim of the new project is to expand the development of the preparatory project into an international ESF project, which aims, among other things, to transfer international know-how, practices and operating models to North Karelia and to utilise this in the development of enterprises in the region. The objective of the Silver Economy project is to improve the supply and quality of education in growth and structural change sectors, as well as the skills and adaptability of men and women in employment to changing skills needs, and to create new 50+ products and services in the region. The project develops anticipation of skills needs, strengthens cooperation between education and working life, the relevance of training provision and promotes the integration of R & D into education. In line with this objective, the project will strengthen knowledge of the Silver Economy theme, operating models, age-friendly services, and increase the service design and business skills of companies in the region, so that they can better respond to the needs of older consumers. The objective is to enable companies to have sufficient know-how to develop new 50+ products and services. Measures to improve skills are targeted at the personnel of companies (including entrepreneurs) who need service design skills to target services to a new consumer group. The implementation of the international Silver Economy project is divided into five work packages:TP 1. Increase the competence of the employees and training organisations in the region on age-friendly, Silver Economy business (targeting services, product and service development, marketing and age competence) TP 2. Enable co-operation and co-development and create a regional network providing products and services to over 50 year oldsTP 3. Develop new approaches to the single market and cooperation. Testing and deploying channels for Silver Economy marketing, possible to use existing channelsTP 4. Implementation of 50+ service pilots and planning of events for older consumersTP 5.
