Sustainable Tourism Mobility — Sustainable Tourism Mobility

The carbon footprint of mobility is a key sustainability challenge for tourism in Pirkanmaa. At the same time, sustainability and low carbon are becoming increasingly important in the choice of tourists. Pirkanmaa has the opportunity to respond to these expectations through systematic service development and cooperation between operators. In addition to promoting sustainability, low-carbon mobility service solutions offer opportunities to implement new, experiential travel services by combining local train connections, other public transport and cycling. If implemented in good quality, they can be a significant attraction factor for attracting both domestic and foreign tourists to Pirkanmaa. The aim of the sustainable tourism mobility services project is to strengthen the tourism industry in Pirkanmaa and the sustainable business opportunities of tourism companies by developing low-carbon mobility services for tourist destinations. The project will carry out an assessment of the needs of key tourist destinations and companies in Pirkanmaa, an international survey of good practices and service models for sustainable tourism mobility, and will organise joint thematic workshops for tourism operators and key stakeholders. The themes are related to, for example, ticket cooperation models, the utilisation of rail connections and stations in tourism services and the means of offsetting the carbon footprint. The workshops will utilise the results of an international study and international experts, user-driven research and the results of other sustainable mobility projects. In addition, the most committed tourism companies and destinations, with the help of an external service designer, draw up their own sustainable mobility action plans on the basis of which commercially viable service solutions combining tourism and mobility are selected and conceived. The action plans will ensure long-term development work to promote sustainable mobility even after the project. In addition, 2-5 service experiments will be carried out on the basis of needs assessments and action plans. The main results of the project will be 15 new sustainable tourism mobility service concepts (of which at least 5 will be introduced in the short term), 5 Sustainable Mobility Action Plans for tourist destinations, and a replication of the Sustainable Mobility Action Plan for Tourism, which will become a concept of international interest. The project creates new information on sustainable mobility service solutions and their business potential, and promotes cooperation and expertise in the tourism sector in the development of responsible tourism. For companies, the project offers concrete solutions to contribute to the goals of carbon neutrality in Pirkanmaa. The results of the project will be implemented nationwide through the networks of Participators and Visit Finland’s Sustainable Travel Finland programme.
