Lapland is profiled internationally as an object of sustainable Arctic nature and experience tourism. The development of sustainable and responsible tourism will also play a major role in the upcoming Lapland Tourism Strategy 2019-2021. The Välkky project aims to promote the objective of low carbon in tourism in Lapland. The project focuses in particular on the aspects of environmental and economic sustainability. The project coordinates cooperation, sets common objectives for the future, takes measures, monitors and evaluates development by using different indicators and communicates results. Measures are implemented at enterprise, tourism and regional levels. The themes of the project are the ecological and economic sustainability of tourism in the long term, energy solutions, recycling and waste management, and low-carbon and sustainability indicators. The project will carry out a study on the impact of tourism and other industries on the regional economy from the perspectives of land use, sustainable development and life-cycle thinking. The study creates a vision for ecologically and economically sustainable development in the long term. The survey is expected to provide comparative information that will help, for example, to reconcile the needs of different industries. The project will be integrated to complement existing regional sustainable development and low-carbon projects, as well as Visit Finland’s “Sustainable Arctic Tourism Detinations” project. This avoids duplication of measures and complements the whole with precise and targeted measures. The objectives of the project are 1. to produce a study of the regional economic impact of tourism and other industries from a life-cycle perspective, which will allow decisions to be taken to support sustainability in the long term. 2. Deploy and monitor the carbon footprint of regions; 3. reduce the carbon footprint of tourist centres through regional measures; 4. improve the environmental know-how, energy efficiency and material efficiency of tourism companies and tourist regions; 5. develop solutions for recycling and waste management in cooperation between businesses, municipalities and tourist regions; and 6. coordinate cooperation and increase the competitiveness of the tourism industry by effectively communicating the objectives, measures and results of sustainable development. As a result of the project, the carbon footprint of tourism in Lapland will be reduced and sustainability will be improved. The project produces measurable results to monitor and communicate the sustainability of tourism.
