Tourism diverse — internationalising Oulu region, attractive OULU REGION 2018

The aim of the project is to increase the visibility of the Oulu region (Oulu, Oulun Matkailu Oy, Syöte, Kalajoki and Rokua Geopark) and the Northern Ostrobothnia nature areas as an international tourist destination and to strengthen the region’s economic activity. The increase in awareness and trade is based on closer cooperation between the tourist regions involved, the identification of the strengths of each region and the cross-marketing of each tourist area and the extensive use of cross-marketing in the tourist area of the Oulu region. In addition, the attractiveness of the area will be strengthened by using the brands of the main nature sites of the Oulu region in product and communication content. In order to achieve the desired increase in internationality, strong development work must be carried out in each tourist area relating to entrepreneurship, know-how, productisation, cooperation, accessibility and marketing. The project consists of regional work packages, the measures of which are to develop the attractiveness of each region and the readiness of companies to achieve international trade. The measures of the regional work packages support the joint market and product packaging of the tourist area in the Oulu region. In addition to regional work packages, the project’s objectives can be achieved by organising tour operators’ visits to defined market areas (some of the strong ones already operating e.g. Central Europe, some new openings, e.g. Asia), joint exhibitions (e.g. Matka — Fair in Helsinki, ITB in Berlin and other similar trade fairs in different markets). Exhibitions will be closed together with competitive experts during the project), and marketing measures (both electronic and print media). The results of the project will strengthen the attractiveness and competitiveness of tourist areas, open up new and strengthened existing markets, increased international trade, increased cooperation between tourist regions and their companies in marketing and product packages. The effectiveness of the project measures will be measured in the mid-term of the project using, among other things, the ongoing CoReFor project. In this case, it is also possible to redirect the measures, taking into account possible changes in the field of tourism.
