The aim of the development project is to create new services and service concepts for the local population and tourists based on Orthodox culture with a networked operating model in North Karelia and its surrounding areas. Orthodoxism is of interest to the general public. In North Karelia, Orthodox culture is a strong attraction, but it is still one of the unique cultural contents of the province that have not risen to the opportunities they offer. Raising awareness of the Orthodox culture and promoting urban and provincial tourism are part of both the plans of the City of Joensuu and the Regional Council of North Karelia, and the project also serves the interests of the whole province. The realisation of the objectives requires the optimisation of the resources of the Orthodox actors in Joensuu, North Karelia and the neighbouring provinces. The priority action is to build and consolidate a networked operating model, where the Orthodox Culture Foundation will position itself as the coordinator of the action and the so-called network weaving organisation, bringing the various actors together and partners. The groundwork for building a networked operating model began when the Orthodox Culture Foundation convened a project preparation team to prepare the project in late 2014. For example, in the production of cultural content, the University of Eastern Finland’s expertise, creative industries and cooperation with Valamo and Lintula monasteries are utilised. The project measures include, in addition to a networked operating model, the production of thematic content in Finnish, English, Russian and Karelian languages, development and piloting of event productions and service concepts, planning and testing of tourism tours to orthodox destinations in the province and neighbouring regions. In addition, the project will create a new tourism company by lowering the start-up threshold and/or new tourism products for existing businesses. New websites will be developed as a common information channel for the actors involved in Orthodox and Orthodox culture, as well as to reach target audiences and increase the accessibility of services. The results of the project have been set to increase the flow of tourists in North Karelia and to increase the mental wellbeing of the local population with new and high-quality services and service concepts.
