Construction of the Regional Museum of the Antique Narbonne

The city of Narbonne played a vital role in Roman times, this prestigious past is no longer visible in the urban landscape. The Languedoc-Roussillon Region has embarked on the construction of a new archaeological museum in Narbonne to gather all the ancient collections currently scattered between different museums and reserves. These collections of exceptional wealth include a lapidary collection of more than 1,400 carved blocks from ancient monuments, as well as a unique collection in France of mural paintings discovered in rich Roman houses. A research centre as well as a museum, this new establishment aims to revive the Roman city of Narbo Martius in the eyes of the public, contribute to the development of archaeological research and raise awareness of the new practices of today’s archaeology. This project was built in consultation with existing museums or as a project on the regional territory (in particular with the project of the Musée de la Romanité de Nîmes), in order to make it one of the important milestones of the regional territory. It is therefore a question of building a new museum located at the eastern entrance of the city, on a plot of about 3 hectares, for a useful area of about 9.000 m². To this end, an architectural competition was organised in 2012, which led to the selection of a project management team made up of the associated Foster+Partners agency
