Monitoring of species and habitats of Community importance under the Habitats and Birds Directives

The aim of the project is to implement a wide-ranging monitoring of species and habitats, to ensure the availability of up-to-date data through an information system and to reduce the number of unknown status of habitats and species of Community importance (a total of 59 habitats and species). By completing and improving monitoring, it will be possible to process reports on the status of habitats and species of European interest and individual bird species (reporting) for the European Commission, thus fulfilling national legislative requirements and the requirements of EU directives. The implementation and extension of monitoring will be ensured by monitoring the status (monitoring) of species and habitats of Community importance according to the requirements of the Habitats and Birds Directives throughout Slovakia. The results of the monitoring will serve to ensure the objectives of the Directives, in particular to maintain and improve the status of species and habitats of Community importance and to report regularly to the European Commission (reporting). The realisation of the project objectives will be carried out through the implementation of monitoring on selected permanent monitoring sites (TML) according to the established methodology and frequency, which need to be objectified and specified before implementation in the field. The following will be monitored: non-forest habitats and botanical taxa, forest habitats, birds, fish and other animal species such as rodents, beetles, butterflies, etc. The TML network will be complemented by additional TML, especially for individual bird species, ensuring that TML is distributed throughout Slovakia. For this purpose, it is necessary to provide for a visit to all original sites in order to establish new TMLs for additional habitats/species (Number of monitored sites where there was an increase in the number of monitored species or habitats – 3000). It is also necessary to establish a completely new TML (Number of newly listed monitored sites). An important part of the project is also ensuring publicity of monitoring through the public portal and its connection to practical site management and preparation of professional publications.
