Cloud and Big Data Center for participation in the European Open Science Cloud (CeCBiD-EOSC)

The general objective of the CeCBiD-EOSC project is to increase the research capacity in order to increase the international scientific competitiveness of IFIN-HH, by upgrading the Cloud infrastructure, expanding the massive data infrastructure and creating a high-performance data center, to be integrated into the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). At the same time, the project proposes a technical solution for the interconnection at national level, within a federalised Cloud system, of private cloud centers developed in institutions belonging to the RDI system, capable of providing users with access through a unique interface to the resources and services provided by these centers. Implementing this solution will streamline the use of Cloud resources by research groups and will significantly stimulate cooperation between specialists in advanced information technologies. The infrastructure realised within the project will support the development of RDI activities within four specific fields of ERC classification (PE6_2 Computer systems, parallel/distributed systems, sensor networks; PE6_11 Machine learning; PE6_12 Scientific Computing; PE6_13 Bioinformatics, biocomputing, DNA and molecular computation), with applications relevant to six other research areas covered by the PE2 groups – Fundamental Constituents of Matter, PE3 – Condensed Matter Physics, LS2 – Genetics, Genomics, Bioinformatics, namely: PE2_2 Particle physics; PE2_3 Nuclear physics; PE2_11 Lasers and laser physics; PE3_10 Nanophysics: nanoelectronics; LS2_10 Bioinformatics; LS2_11 Computational biology. Through its objectives, the project will lead to the expansion of the capacity of Cloud and Big Data resources, as well as to the qualitative improvement and diversification of computing and data analytics services that the Advanced Computing Center of IFIN-HH will provide to the national and international scientific community, thereby contributing to the development of the national RDI system and to increasing visibility at European level. Also, the realised infrastructure will stimulate the institution’s engagement, individually or in collaboration, in new RDI projects and will increase the knowledge transfer capacity of IFIN-HH in the smart specialisation sub-areas of the RDI Strategy 2014-2020 in which the expected results of the project are included, namely: 2.1.1 Analysis, management and security of large data; 2.1.4 High performance calculations and new computational models. In addition, some of the proposed CD activities have relevance for subarea 4.4.2 – Polymeric materials, nanomaterials, nanotechnologies. The project has an important socio-economic component, implementing the necessary infrastructure for the training of researchers in interdisciplinary fields and specialists in advanced computing technologies, in order to capitalise on technological competences
