The aim of the project is to modernise the research infrastructure of the University of Latvia in the fields of smart specialisation and concentration of research resources at the University of Latvia Academic Centre in Tornakalns in order to increase the research and innovative capacity of the University of Latvia and international competitiveness. The aim of the project corresponds to the developed development strategy of the University of Latvia for 2016-2020, which is coordinated with the Ministry of Education and Science. The project is implemented by the University of Latvia in cooperation with the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, University of Latvia. The total eligible funding of the project is EUR 29741919, including ERDF funding EUR 24016606, state budget funding EUR 4238217 and co-funding of UL and UL’s WMD in the amount of EUR 1487096. The project is planned to be implemented as a non-economic project.The following activities are planned in the project:1. Construction for the modernisation of research infrastructure for which the following sub-actions are planned: 1.1. Construction of the University of Latvia Academic Centre Scientific House (Jelgavas Street 3, Riga); 1.2. Reconstruction of the UL MII building (Raiņa bulvāris 29, Riga); 2. Purchase and installation of scientific equipment, equipment, ICT and other tangible assets UL and UL MII for which the following sub-activities are planned: 2.1. Purchase of scientific equipment in LU, including installation, testing, briefing; 2.2. Purchase of scientific equipment at UL MII; 2.3. Purchase of equipment and furniture necessary for furnishing the premises of the science house; 3. Transfer of departments of the University of Latvia to the Academic Centre of LU; 4. Information and publicity measures; 5. Project management and implementation The project will be implemented at the following addresses: The University of Latvia Academic Centre Scientific House and Nature House (Jelgavas iela 1 and Jelgavas Street 3, Riga), Faculty of Computers of the University of Latvia (Raiņa Boulevard 19, Riga), Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, University of Latvia (Raiņa Boulevard 29, Riga). Premises for STEM study programmes will be built and equipped from the SAM 8.1.1. from the event 1.1.1.4. premises will be built and equipped for research directions implemented in the field of science, medicine and life sciences.The project implementation period is 34 months from the signing of the agreement on project implementation (November, 2017-August, 2020). Before the agreement was concluded, the following preparatory works were carried out – the development of a technical project for the construction of the science house was completed, construction project expertise was carried out, the construction of the construction of the construction of the construction of the building was received in the Construction Board, and construction of the Science House was commenced in July 2017.According to the OECD scientific sector classification, the project complies with the following fields of science and subsectors: Natural Sciences; Medicine and health sciences; Nanotechnologies, materials sciences; Biology, environment, agriculture, industrial, medical biotechnology and medical engineering. Taking into account the diversity of research directions implemented by the University of Latvia and the vast extent of knowledge, capacity and research potential, modernisation of research infrastructure implemented as a result of the project will contribute to the development of all five areas of smart specialisation in Latvia: Biomedicine, medical technologies, biopharmaceuticals and biotechnology; Smart materials, technologies and engineering systems; Information and communication technologies, knowledge-intensive bioeconomy and smart energy.The project will complement the EU funds’ investments in the modernisation of the research directions implemented by the University of Latvia and the construction and equipping of the Nature House of the University of Latvia during the 2007-2013 planning period. After completion of the project all research directions of the University of Latvia implemented in the fields of science, medicine and life sciences, including research infrastructure and human resources, will be concentrated in the Academic Centre of the University of Latvia in Tornakalns, as well as UL MII, and the infrastructure necessary for research has been modernised according to modern requirements. The project will strengthen the research and innovative capacity of the University of Latvia, promote the involvement of the University of Latvia in the infrastructure of the European Union, promote cooperation with merchants and use of research infrastructure at the disposal of the University of Latvia to solve economic and societal problems, as well as increase the ability of the University of Latvia to attract external (foreign and private sector) funding.
