Concentration of research resources of the scientific institute Bioor and strengthening institutional capacity

The aim of the project “Concentration of research resources of the Scientific Institute BIOR and strengthening institutional capacity” developed by Bior Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment is to increase the research capacity of the scientific institute Bioor by carrying out concentration of resources and modernisation of research infrastructure, thus ensuring the Institute’s maximum useful contribution to the Latvian economy in areas of smart specialisation and international competitiveness in the long term. The project, according to the sectoral classification of science, is in line with the field of science; Chemical and biology sub-sectors. The Scientific Institute for Food Safety, Animal Health and the Environment Bior is planning to implement a project that is not related to economic activity. The implementation of the project will facilitate the transformation of the Latvian economy towards higher value added and more efficient use of resources and growth in sectors where new products and services already exist or are possible. Concentration and development of scientific research infrastructure in Bior will promote such smart specialisation priorities as “knowledge base” and specialisation areas – knowledge-intensive bioeconomy; Biomedicine, medical technology, biopharmaceuticals and biotechnology. By implementing the planned activities of the project, several goals of the Institute’s Bior Development Strategy 2015-2020 will be implemented. Main activities planned in the project: • New construction works and site improvement in order to put the building object into operation (construction of the new building adjacent to the BIOR main building in Riga, Lejupes Street 3).• Reconstruction of the existing building of the Vivarija block base floor.• Acquisition of 11 different research facilities based on analysis of existing scientific capacity and provision of equipment and evaluation and achievement of priority scientific areas and objectives defined in the strategy. • Development of the strategy of users of the research infrastructure. The main results of the project:• the newly built construction will ensure the transfer of the Fish Resources Research Department to Lejupes Street 3 and the consolidation of the scientific research base. • Existing buildings at Lejupes Street 3 Vivarija base floor reconstruction will result in the development of preparatory and technical support facilities for scientific personnel, as well as premises for placement, storage and safety of fisheries research equipment as a unified part of research infrastructure.• The acquired and installed 11 research equipment kits will provide and develop further research in the fields of chemistry science, Environmental science, Public and Environmental Health and Veterinary Medicine. • The developed strategy of the users of the Research Infrastructure will define and structure the work with research facilities, expanding the possibilities of the Institute’s researchers and visiting researchers to create new scientific discoveries and developments, participate in high-level international projects and consortia.
