Development of infrastructure of Riga Technical University Centre for Engineering Sciences and Smart Technology in Smart Specialisation.

The aim of the project is to modernise RTU research infrastructure within the scope of Latvia’s smart specialisation areas, thus facilitating involvement in the European Union level infrastructures and the use of modernised infrastructure for solving practical economic problems. RTU is planning the development of research infrastructure in the areas of Smart Specialisation: Knowledge-intensive bioeconomy, biomedicine, medical technology, biopharmaceuticals and biotechnology, smart materials, technologies and engineering systems, smart energy, information and communication technologies. The target group of the project is personnel employed in research.RTU infrastructure development strategy focuses on development of territorially concentrated study and scientific work infrastructure and strengthening strategic specialisation. With the help of this project RTU will continue to invest in areas where reform or restructuring objectives have not yet been achieved and this support will be a logical continuation of investments that have already been made or are taking place and will be based on 2008. Experience gained during the period of 2015 and achieved results and RTU Development Strategy 2015. The strategic objectives and objectives set for 2020.The global practice has shown that the best results are achieved by universities with a single academic and scientific complex that encompass both study and research spaces. The long-term strategic goal of RTU is to create a unified territorial complex of RTU in Ķīpsala and its immediate vicinity with the aim of representing this complex as an essential component of the Riga urban brand, increasing its own and Riga’s international competitiveness. One of the obstacles to RTU’s necessary further development is related to the location of its structural units in various parts of the city of Riga and the construction of buildings, which have been constructed in the s and s, which do not meet the requirements of modern teaching and scientific work. The activities that RTU is planning to implement within the framework of the project correspond to the PO activity, which is not economical in nature. With the help of this project RTU continues its development by creating the core of a strong Centre for Engineering and Smart Technology, supporting the following main investment directions: •to rebuild the infrastructure at Ķīpsalas Street 6b to move to Ķīpsala Faculty of Machinery, Transport and Aeronautics and to be able to fully implement the Research Platform – Transport, City and Development, Materials, Processes and Technology;•Rebuild the infrastructure at Ķīpsalas Street 6a, where the Faculty of Construction Engineering is currently located and could fully implement the Research Platform – City and Development, Materials, Processes and Technologies – Development of the Construction Centre, to implement the infrastructure at Ķīpsalas Street 6a, where the Faculty of Construction Engineering is currently located and could fully implement the Research Platform – City and Development, Materials, processes and technologies – to develop the infrastructure in Ķīpsalas Street 6a, where the Faculty of Construction Engineering is currently located and could fully implement the Research Platform – City and Development, Materials, processes and technologies – to develop infrastructure in Ķīpsalas Street 6a. •to build the Baltic Biomaterial Excellence Centre building (hereinafter referred to as BBCE) on Paula Valdena Street in order to promote multidisciplinary research and develop new research direction related to advanced implant material research in cellular environment.•Equipment with modern and modern equipment and technologies at RTU Engineering Sciences and Smart Technology Centre. The project is planned to be implemented for 75 months from 15 September 2017 to 30 November 2023. The total eligible costs of the project are EUR 32 689 124.22 (including ERDF funding EUR 27 270 120.71, co-financing from the state budget EUR 3 784 547.65 and RTU co-financing EUR 1 634 455,86).
