DECONTAMINATION

The project concerns the decontamination of the Konofagos building and aims to protect public health and the environment. It is a highly specialised project, which will be implemented for the first time in Greece and internationally, as no other cases have been found to clean up buildings with corresponding polluting load, both in terms of toxicity and quantity. The ‘Conoeagus’ building functioned as a filter of tobacco gases resulting from metallurgical work and is located in the complex of the former French Laurium Mining Company. This complex currently houses the Technological and Cultural Park of Lavrio. Due to the above use of the building, highly toxic substances such as arsenic, lead and cadmium have accumulated in high concentrations and quantities which are considered extremely dangerous to public health. Moreover, the building, due to its long non-use but mainly due to the impact of the last major earthquakes in the area, has suffered significant damage to its carrier organism, which are considered dangerous, threatening the building with collapse. In such a case, very large quantities of extremely dangerous substances will be diffused into the environment and the consequences of such a collapse are incalculable. The project is expected to be completed within 40 months of its Accession Decision.
