CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROTECTION OF THE HEALTH AND WELLBEING OF POULTRY AND PUBLIC HEALTH [OVO FRESCO INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL COMPANIES]

Poultry farming is the most dynamic sector of Greek livestock farming. The companies involved in poultry farming are concentrated to a large extent in Epirus (almost 50 % of Greek production), contributing substantially to the development and well-being of the local economy and society.Infectious diseases such as influenza, Newcastle disease and campylobacterisation are the most important threats to systematic poultry farming. In particular, influenza and Newcastle disease are among the most contagious viral diseases in birds. Their importance is important because they cause significant mortality to birds, pose a risk to public health and affect trade both domestically and internationally. The source of contamination is wild and migratory birds, while chicken and egg-producing hens as well as domestic birds are high risk points.Another important risk for systematic poultry farming and public health is campylobacterisation. It is the most common foodborne disease in humans, with the main source of infection in chicken breeding. Also, Campylobacter spp. isolated from chickens have developed antibiotic resistance, making it difficult to treat it in humans. In chickens, the disease is usually asymptomatic. However, they often manifest diarrhea, delay in growth and mortality, which significantly degrades their health and well-being.The main objective of the project is to contribute to the prevention of the above pathological conditions by developing a network of control birds for early diagnosis and taking the necessary measures for the prevention of avian influenza and/or Newcastle disease, and on the other hand with the purification of drinking water to prevent campylobacterisation. This will contribute to the improvement of the health and well-being of chickens, as well as to the production of healthy, safe and quality environmentally friendly products with high added value at low cost, without the risk of residues.
