Research Synergy to address the Great Challenges of the Grid (NEXUS): Energy

The proposed NEXUS project aims to develop innovative systems linking the Grid of Energy, Environment and Rural Production (Water, Food, Minerals), creating technological bases for sustainable economic and social development. Two institutes of the National Centre for Research and Technological Development (EKETA) will contribute collaboratively to the challenges of the Energy-Environment-Agricultural Production Grid, utilising and expanding their specialised experience in agrotechnology and physicochemical processes. NEXUS aims to utilise Greek raw materials and available residues and by-products of the primary sector, promoting the principles of the circular economy that are already in place in the EU and have significant prospects of implementation in our country. NEXUS is expected to create the foundations for the development of intelligent agriculture systems, smart materials production technologies, as well as innovative systems of sustainable energy production and energy carriers. In particular, NEXUS will contribute to the development of a standard integrated and adaptive management system for agricultural units of minimised inputs, aiming at the production of food raw materials and the management of relevant resources (energy, water, etc.) in an environmentally sustainable way. At the same time, NEXUS will support the optimisation of physicochemical, electro-chemical, enzymatic and solar thermochemical processes for integrated exploitation of agricultural and industrial wastes and by-products, for the production of energy and energy carriers (e.g. hydrogen, cracking biooil). The project will also contribute to the development and synthesis of new materials (biochemicals, biopolymers, ceramic magnetics, etc.), with multiple applications such as communications systems, biomedicine, cosmetics and packaging, etc.
