Restoration and promotion of the building block of the market of Dion

Dion, the place of ancient worship of Olympian Zeus at the eastern foothills of Mount Olympus, emerged as the sacred city of the Macedonians, while later, in its place was founded by Octavian Augustus, in 32-31 BC, the Roman colony Colonia Iulia Augusta Diensis. Dion is the most fully excavated site of the Olympus area and one of the largest excavations of modern times in Greece. Rich findings came to light, among them royal inscriptions of Pan-Macedonian, national and historical interest. The archaeological site has an area of approximately 1500 acres and consists of the city within walls and the area of outside the walls sanctuaries. Most of the visible architectural remains belong to the “Roman” phase of the city, which covers the older ones (Classical and Hellenistic). The square of the market, in the southwest of the city, constituted the core of public life and included a large paved square (forum), with an area of 3,944 sq.m. (58Χ68 m), dated to the end of the 2nd- early 3rd century AD, surrounded by galleries and places of public and private life. The proposed project “Restoration and promotion of the building block of the market of Dion” concerns the protection and restoration of the most important square of the city and the overall improvement and promotion of the area by extending the visitor’s route and upgrading the information services. The intervention concerns the entire square of the market with decent work, while the protection and rehabilitation work focuses on the market square and the southwest. The proposed project aims on the one hand to highlight the entire market and, on the other hand, to improve the readability and traffic of the site, while it contributes substantially to the complementarity and further networking of the important archaeological sites and monuments of the area, with multiplier effects in the context of cultural and educational tourism, fed by the visitors (students, students, general public) of the Archaeological Park of Dios, of which it is an integral part.
