The project concerns the construction of the extension of the existing Thessaloniki Water Treatment Plant, so that the current capacity of the plant (treatment of 150.000 m² of water daily) will double. This means, in practice, an increase in the amount of clean drinking water that can be made available by the NFC by 150,000 m² per day. The implementation of the project will have multiple and particularly significant benefits for the city of Thessaloniki, the wider area of Thessaloniki and for the Region of Central Macedonia in general, as well as through it: (1) Clean drinking water will be ensured to serve new areas where problems have been identified in the quality of the water available to their residents. This concerns both the existing and future populations of these areas, exceeding the requirements resulting from the estimated population development. 2) Adequacy of clean drinking water will be ensured to cover existing needs of the residents of the wider area of Thessaloniki, as well as the additional needs that will arise from the estimated population development in the existing area served by the Thessaloniki Water Supply Company (EYAT SA). 3) The additional possibility of serving the estimated future needs of the Thessaloniki Industrial Area (BIFTH) will be provided, thus contributing decisively to the strengthening of the prospects for further development of activities in it, for the benefit of the city and its inhabitants (economic growth, employment prospects, etc.). 4) The conditions will be created and the technical conditions will be ensured to allow the reduction of non-contributory water in the water supply network (loss etc.), not fragmentary, but through the optimisation of the operation of the existing water supply system of the area served by EYATH S.A.5 There will be a decisive contribution to the achievement of key objectives of the River Basin Management Plan of the Water District of Central Macedonia. 6) There will be a decisive contribution to the fulfilment of the Special Objective “Improvement of water resource management and the development of relevant infrastructures” of the Central Macedonia Regional Operational Programme (EPP) 2014-2020.
