CONSTRUCTION OF BICYCLE TRACKS, PEDESTRIAN SPACES AND SQUARES IN THE CITY OF STEI

The overall objective of the project is to: Contribute to reducing the effects of air pollution on the environment and on human health caused by emissions of gases from motor vehicles. Through its intended purpose, the implementation of the project directly contributes to the achievement of Specific Objective 3.2. “Carbon Reduction in Urban Areas Based on Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans” of Investment Priority 4e: Promoting low-carbon strategies for all types of territories, in particular for urban areas, including the promotion of sustainable multimodal urban mobility and mitigation-relevant adaptation measures', by: • The creation of pedestrian areas and urban squares. • Vitalising the city center area by implementing new, appropriate public functions. • Creating the quality of “revitalised public spaces”. • Improving the urban design elements of the centre. • Substantial decrease in traffic in the city centre (particularly transit traffic and non-resident traffic). • Strengthening the pedestrian character through the concept of share space velo, pedestrians and riparians. • Encourage non-motorised transport and in particular pedestrian traffic. • Removal of parking spaces. • The creation and layout of the market in the area of the House of Culture, as well as the rehabilitation and modernisation of the artery fountain. Following the implementation of the construction works, the specific results of this project will be achieved, which will ensure the achievement of the specific objectives proposed are: — 0.632 KM traffic infrastructure, for pedestrians and cyclists (share space), built; pedestrian areas: 17021.44 sqm pedestrian areas of which: rehabilitated 7785.99 sqm and newly created 9235.45 sqm, – 6 retractable bollards and 8 delimitation pillars – 101 newly planted trees/shrubs – 35 parking spaces in the city center, dismantled. The need for the implementation of this project has been identified in the SUMP through the targets: ‘1. Increasing the modal share of non-motorised transport – increasing the number of cyclists compared to 2017 statistics by 6.98 % by 2020, 22.01 % by 2025 and 31.02 % by 2032“”7.
