Capitalising on the North-Dobrogean ethnographic heritage by restoring and modernising the Museum of Ethnography and Folk Art Tulcea

Tulcea County, located in the south-eastern extremity of Romania, in the northern part of Dobrogea, when the Danube flows into the Black Sea, with an area of 8,499 km², has a unique natural potential in Romania and Europe, as well as an important cultural, social, historical and archaeological potential – offered by the Roman and Greek fortresses, the pale-Christian complexes attesting to the emergence of Christianity in Europe, as well as monasteries and churches with special architectural and historical value. In these circumstances, the development and promotion of tourism are priorities for local authorities, as stipulated in the county’s development plans. Bathed from three parts of waters, the county territory, the oldest and most complex of the plateaus of Romania, represents a diversified economic space with many opportunities for economic development, from industry, agriculture, tourism, able to allow sustainable development and to ensure prosperity of the population. Whereas the tourism potential of the South-East Region is linked to the cultural heritage of historical remains, religious and cultural edifices, monuments and museums, under the South-East Regional Development Plan 2014-2020 (http://www.adrse.ro/Planificare/PDR_2014-2020.aspx), the regional priority on integrated sustainable urban development outlined by the specific objective of increasing the attractiveness and competitiveness of urban areas in order to preserve, protect and develop historical and cultural heritage has also been established. From a tourist point of view, there are two major areas of interest in Tulcea County: the wetland, represented in particular by the Danube Delta and the Razim-Sinoe lagoon complex, suitable for the practice of ecotourism and the land area, represented in particular by the northern area of the county, suitable for the practice of cultural and religious tourism. Strategically located between the two major areas of interest, the city of Tulcea represents both the entrance gate to the Danube Delta and the access gate to the northern area of the county (also called the area of the triangle of the tulcene monasteries or the area of the tulcene spirituality). The municipality represents, for the county, a tourist development pole and concentrates most of the cultural, historical and religious values of Tulcea County in various objectives: North Dobrogean Cultural Heritage Museum Complex, Museum of Ethnography and Folk Art, Museum of History and Archaeology, Tulcea Tourist Information and Promotion Center, as well as numerous places of worship. Harnessing and putting into the tourist circuit the cultural, historical and religious potential of Tulcean would have a special impact that will generate a homogeneous development, from a tourist point of view, of the entire county. In this context, the proposed project is GENERAL OBIECTIV: conservation, protection and sustainable exploitation of the cultural heritage of Tulcea County in order to improve the urban environment.
