BIOVÄX Gävleborg

Gävleborg County has low biogas production. SCB’s county statistics from 2017 show that Gävleborg ends up among the five counties with the lowest extraction of biogas, with 24 GWh, i.e. about 1 % of the country’s total biogas production. Regional biogas production therefore needs to increase in order to manage the transition to a resource efficient, circular and bio-based economy. During the feasibility study conducted 2018-2019 by the University of Gävle, co-financed by Region Gävleborg, a knowledge base was developed about the local conditions for the production and disposal of biogas. The preliminary study’s mapping and results show obstacles and challenges that hamper biogas production in the region. A regional network was established that includes SME companies, biogas actors and stakeholders at the national level. The study shows the need for development and the utilisation of knowledge and competence of SMEs and regional actors. Collaboration between actors within the entire biogas value chain for exchange of experience, use of biomaterials and disposal of products was insufficient. Inexpensive, technical solutions for stable production were demanded by SME, and they set profitability as a condition. Goal An overall and long-term goal of the project is to contribute to sustainable and competitive biogas establishment for SME in Gävleborg. The aim of the project is to strengthen the establishment and expansion of biogas production at SME in the region with a focus on; Milestone 1 Strengthened collaboration between small and medium-sized companies and other actors in the biogas industry. Interim goal 2 Effective biogas processes and adapted biofertilisers according to the quality of digestion residues. Interim goal 3 Business models that support and develop the regional biogas companies’ business expertise. Target group(s) The primary target group of the project is SME in Gävleborg County, which has the potential to develop and establish small-scale biogas production. The target group is limited to SME in the biogas processing process. The primary target group consists of two companies in Hälsingland that are ready to start biogas production, and eight companies that are interested in such activities. Examples of secondary target groups are; — Energy and sanitation companies that cooperate with major regional biogas companies (e.g. Gästrike Recyclers, Bollnäs-Ovanåkers sanitation AB – Borab and Söderhamn Nära AB), – basic industries that are customers and users of biogas (e.g. Sandvik Materials Technology AB), as well as regional customers for biofertilisers consisting of plant, horticultural and agricultural companies. The secondary target group also includes national actors, such as consultants who are advisors and experts in biogas establishment Expected results at project conclusions The main objective of the project is to promote the establishment and growth of small-scale biogas production at SME companies in Gävleborg, which contribute to the transition to a low-carbon economy. Expected long term effects In the long term, the number of companies producing biogas in the region is assessed to increase. The project gives biogas entrepreneurs in the primary target group better conditions to become competitive in the future by: — gain access to a collaborative platform, in which biogas actors and experts are included – gain access to a adapted data model (WP3) and business model (WP4), as well as increased skills to manage business barriers and find sustainable solutions – gain knowledge of different strategies for developing biogas locally – gain the competence to switch to more low-carbon operations through efficient use of organic residual products – utilises unused expertise in underrepresented groups represented in the project’s network, and during the project identifiable. SMEs will have gained knowledge of how different groups can be given more influence in their operations.
