The low-carbon location 2.0

The project is a continuation of the applicant’s previous project, The Low Carbon Place, where new knowledge about the climate impact of Umeå residents and lessons learned about how a municipality can work with the promotion of sustainable consumption and sustainable lifestyles has been obtained. This project will help to integrate new methods and tools for the transition to a low-carbon economy. The overall long-term goal of the project is that the region has shifted to a low-carbon and circular economy in all sectors and that climate impact from consumption has been radically reduced. The aim of the project is that the public sector has more tools and methods to promote a low-carbon and circular economy and facilitate sustainable consumption. The project also has a number of milestones, which aim for companies and municipalities to gain increased knowledge of the circular economy and have begun a transition to more circular resource management. In addition, the public organisations involved in the project will have developed expertise in promoting sustainable habits and climate-friendly consumption and gain knowledge of the climate impact of consumption, as well as gain knowledge of the changes that make a difference. Tools for decision support regarding climate action and follow-up have been further developed and spread to more municipalities. Regional business is involved in the project through a network for restaurants and in the development of circular business models. The project also engages important regional corporate networks through, among others, Visit Umeå, Energy Office North and the Network for Sustainable Building, which serve as contact points out to the companies. At the end of the project, the public sector is expected to have access to more efficient tools and ways of working to reduce energy use and climate impact from consumption. The methods are designed to equalise socioeconomic differences in climate impacts. In the long term, the project contributes to creating conditions for the region’s inhabitants and public organisations to consume climate-smartly and strengthen the local business sector’s capacity to meet the demand for sustainable products and services.
