The overall goal of the project is to increase capacity in Port of Skellefteå to meet business demand and needs. The project goal is to prepare Port of Skellefteå for Feedertrafik. The milestones are to enable dark driving for larger vessels and increase storage areas in the vicinity of container handling. Dredging, new fairway marking and building logistics areas create conditions for regional business to manage international business efficiently, climate-smart and secure, thus contributing to the region’s growth. There is a continuous customer dialogue between the port operations and the operators in the area and the project is a result of the exchange with customers who express the need for increased demand for the amount and efficiency of transport, logistics solutions and storage areas. The actors in the port support the project and will participate as a reference group in the project. The project involves concrete measures on the fairway and after the end of the project the bottleneck, which today’s fairway means, is expected to be corrected and during a broader day window to receive larger vessels. In the long term, the measures mean that the port can handle increased number, larger vessel calls and meet the industry’s increased demand for freight transport, thereby contributing to increased growth and the competitiveness of the business sector in the region. In the project, Skellefteå municipality will work according to a standardised plant process, which guarantees results and quality in the work, and they will further take into account Skellefteå municipality’s guidelines for sustainable construction. The work on communication and marketing of the port’s development is planned to continue after completion of the project to raise awareness of the strategic role of the port in the region’s business sector and its development.
