The Wood Region – European Innovation Centre

Norra Mellansverige is a distinct forest region with great potential to develop highly refined products with wood as raw material. Although the forest, forest and wood industry is one of the primary industries, this opportunity is not utilised in an optimal way, but the turnover refers largely to low-processed products. In northern and southern Sweden there are investments that have brought together the forest and wood industry to develop new products, systems and services, which has led to increased value added and competitiveness. Development has been made in collaboration between research and industry. This feasibility study will highlight and concretise the needs and expectations of different stakeholders linked to the formation of a Wood Center. The feasibility study will highlight both the development potential and the feasibility of investments within the intended main tracks; product processing (through integration into the value chain) and development/productification of residual materials (e.g. composite materials). The goal of the feasibility study is a basis for the start-up of a Wood Center in Central Sweden. The basis is anchored by key stakeholders and includes purpose, goals, strategy, initial activities, organisation and function. The feasibility study will provide answers to what interfaces and forms of cooperation look like with the country’s other wood centres (north, south), and how to interact with Paper Province, Inova and Karlstad University, as well as centres and universities on the Norwegian side (such as Tretorget, Högskolen in Hedmark, Högskolen i Gjövik). The feasibility study will examine the possibilities available to apply for public support for the planned implementation project. The aim of the implementation project is to increase growth in the region’s small and medium-sized companies in the wood industry by increasing the innovation capacity of enterprises and increasing their ability to integrate forward into the value chain with more refined products. The ambition is to influence the industrial structure; from bulk supply, independent companies, to networking companies that are part of composite value chains. Going from supply pressure to demand. The aim of the implementation project is to establish a wood centre in Central Sweden, which promotes contacts between SMEs in the wood industry, between the wood industry and other industries that demand components and materials, between companies and research/education, etc. The Wood Center will create a test centre and a creative environment for the development of further processing of residual products from the forest industry. The test environment will be located in connection with an industrial facility in Torsby municipality, in order to utilise mechanical and personal expertise in the area of drying and pressing of chips. The area also has expertise at a doctorate level in wood and production. An important interim goal is to develop the region’s and the site’s unique assets (competence, production capacity, raw material) and its potential to develop environmentally friendly composite materials, which respond to demand in existing industries (building, timber trade, etc.) as well as new industries (e.g. automotive and other manufacturing industries). The implementation project will also increase the exchange between Swedish and Norwegian actors and promote joint product and market development. There are favourable synergies with the Norwegian competence centre Tretorget working to help develop new forest and wood-based operations and incubator activities. Both Tretorget and Gjövik University have shown a clear interest in collaborating with a wood centre in Torsby and the intended test facility, as well as establishing a cluster that extends across the border region.
