Taste of Gävleborg

Sweden has great potential to increase its food production. Already today, the food sector is the fourth largest industry in Sweden and with increased domestic demand, which would reduce the vulnerability of our society, and increased exports, the food industry has great potential to create growth and jobs. When it comes Gävleborg, the structural transformation in the food industry has followed the national development where food processing companies have tended to grow larger in order to meet a demand where low price and volume are major competitive advantages. However, the number of smaller food processing companies has increased in recent years, creating food with other competitive advantages such as quality and guarantee of origin, which has created new jobs. Furthermore, the situation in our surrounding world has meant that we now welcome many people who create new lives in our country and in our region. They bring their food culture, which creates opportunities for both new products and new markets. Overall, there are great opportunities for our region to work for the development of the food industry. In the feasibility study: Local food in Gävleborg, says that Gävleborg has a growth potential in strategic work with the food processing industry, where development of the industry as a whole, both in the small and large food companies, has the potential to provide economic growth and jobs for the region. In the same report, the authors believe that a regional initiative should include some of the following measures: — Prerequisite for an increased supply of locally and regionally processed foods with clear added value. — Enable a business and industry development, in cooperation with other industries such as the primary industry, tourism industry. Preferably within the framework of an innovation system where there is a close link between research, innovation, product and market. (For example Movexum) – Increased opportunities for local and regional food products to be sold on a regional, national and international market (export). — A strengthening context for food companies such as participation in the advent of a regional food strategy and/or strengthening regional food identity such as work with gastronomic regions etc. Today, about 50 % of everything we eat and drink in Sweden is imported. A media entity from consumers (both within and outside Sweden) and other demands from public customers have increased demand for foodstuffs other than price and volume. The large multinational and global structures, of which Swedish food production is now a part, have begun to complement with new structures where more small-scale local and regional food processing companies are the companies that can largely account for the regional development of growth and jobs in the food industry. Objective: Regional innovations and structures for sustainable food production have evolved into viable products and companies, which has created growth in the food industry in Gävleborg. A functioning approach exists where different actors who support growth and development work together in a way that supports increased profitability in the food industry. The association MatVärden serves as an industry organisation where the number of members and knowledge-based services to companies and other actors is increasing in Gävleborg. Gävleborg is a region that is identified as a culinary region, both internally and externally.
