The implementation of the project proposal will contribute to the improvement of ambient air quality in the municipality of Smolyan by reducing the excessive levels of fine particulate matter and indirectly of nitrogen oxides. The activities envisaged are aimed at supporting measures related to the conduct of studies, studies, information and awareness campaigns, the result of which will also be specific investment measures aimed at the identified as the main source of pollution by PM10 domestic heating falling within the scope of the measures of the National Programme for the Improvement of Ambient Air Quality (2018-2024) and contributing to the objectives of the National Air Pollution Control Programme. Directive (EU) 2016/2284 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 14 December 2016 on the reduction of national emissions of certain atmospheric pollutants. The measures implemented by the project proposal, together with other measures supported by various sources of funding under European and national programmes, as well as with funds from the municipal budget, will also contribute to fulfilling the country’s commitments to improve air quality management and will help achieve the objectives stemming from the national legislation transposing the requirements of Directive 2008/50/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 21 May 2008 on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe (Directive 2008/50/EC).
