Creation of high-efficiency cogeneration capacity using renewable energy sources in Vilnius city

The total value of the project is EUR 209.1 million. The project is planned to be financed by EU support, EIB loans and the applicant’s own funds. The project will contribute directly to the achievement of the specific objective “Increase the use of energy from renewable sources” in priority 4.1.1 of the Operational Programme. The main objective of the project is to increase energy production during the high-efficiency cogeneration process using renewable energy sources for energy production. In the fuel balance of district heating production, the vast majority of imported natural gas, which is about 2.5 times more expensive than biofuels, still holds. Vilnius uses about one third of all district heating in Lithuania, but the share of renewable energy sources (RES) in the fuel balance of heat production reached 32 % in 2014, i.e. the share of RES in the fuel balance is insufficient and most installations are designed to produce only thermal energy. During the project, a high-efficiency cogeneration plant using biofuels will be built, which will contribute to increasing energy efficiency, production of energy from renewable energy sources, promoting cogeneration, ensuring sustainable development and energy independence.
