Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit — Utilising Arcticism to promote business and visibility in Lapland

Finland holds the presidency of the Arctic Council 2017-2019. In connection with the Presidency, the project raises the Arctic profile of Lapland and its actors. Key to the project is the perspective of the region’s business community, i.e. the benefits for companies from Arctic research, international networks and the promotion of Lapland’s entire Arctic expertise to strengthen business, create new business and find new customer relationships. The long-term objectives are to consolidate Rovaniemi and Lapland’s position as a leading Arctic city and region, and to strengthen the position of Lapland’s higher education institutions as Finland’s leading educator and mediator of Arctic knowledge base. The project package is divided into four parts. The first set of measures focuses on channelling Arctic information to increase and utilise the knowledge base in business operations. The main content of the Measures Package is the development of the ArcticFinland portal as a national channel of Arctic information and discussion, as well as the development of an operating model to channel relevant Arctic-related information to Lappish companies. The aim is to develop a mechanism whereby representatives of the university and business in Lapland could make better use of each other’s Arctic expertise and understand each other’s needs and starting points. There is also a national section of the Measures Package that aims to make Finland’s Arctic activities, research and discussion visible and to improve the networking of operators. The second package focuses on building the content of the Arctic Design Capital® trademark. The overall objective of the project is to strengthen the image of Rovaniemi Arctic competence alongside a strong tourist image. This package of measures focuses in particular on strengthening Rovaniemi’s position as the capital of Arctic design. By strengthening the image of Rovaniemi as a top expert in Arctic design, the operating conditions of companies in the sector will be increased by attracting new know-how, business activities and international investment. The City of Rovaniemi has registered the Arctic Design Capital® trademark in the European Union and the registration process has also been launched in Japan, China and South Korea. The project produces new content for the Arctic Design Capital® trademark, especially through the anniversary clock of Arctic Design. The third package of measures is the organisation and practical implementation of the work of the Lapland Arctic Council Host Committee. The aim of the broad-based cooperation consortium is to provide maximum benefit to Lapland during the 2017-2019 Presidency of the Arctic Council of Finland. The central activity is to highlight Lapland’s profile, good Lappish operating models and the strengths of the business community in the region and the Arctic expertise of the universities of Lapland in connection with the meetings and events of the Presidency. The fourth package of measures is to consolidate the Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit conference as an international Arctic science and city forum. The culmination to date is the organisation of the Rovaniemi Arctic Spirit conference during the centenary year 2017. The project will create the conditions for the event to become a high-quality forum for Arctic dialogue at regular intervals, which will benefit the whole of Lapland through the strengthening of the Arctic profile.
